Knueven Voices ‘Concern of Great Importance’

The Planning Commission’s Public Hearing for the Reston Comprehensive Amendment has been set for April 22, 2015.

Ken Knueven, president of the Reston Association, voiced a recent concern.

“A concern of great importance has recently arisen,” Knueven wrote to the Fairfax County Department of Planning and Zoning on Feb. 11.

Kneuven said the Reston Association is concerned that the boundaries of redevelopment areas around the Silver Line Transit stations will be expanded by the Planning staff to full one-mile concentric circles.

“Let me be clear that Reston Association and its members oppose any change to the boundaries of the Transit Station Areas. The Transit Station Area southern boundary of Sunrise Valley Drive must be maintained in order to protect the current fabric of Reston and its stable residential neighborhoods.”

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors adopted its plans for Reston Transit Stations Comprehensive Plan amendment on Feb. 11, 2014.

According to summaries of Phase I, “transit-oriented development” has been planned around each of the three Transit Station Areas.

“Transit-oriented development is a land use, development and transportation policy that promotes a mix of uses, walkability, a range of housing types and commercial development around a transit station,” according to Fairfax County’s Reston Master Plan Special Study.

The plan recommends that the most dense development be located in existing commercial areas within one half mile of each Metro station, according to Fairfax County documents.
