Sports Briefs for the week of May 27

O’Connell Softball Wins State Championship

The Bishop O’Connell softball team won the VISAA state championship with a 5-2 victory over Paul VI on May 15 at Dinwiddie Sports Complex in Sutherland.

It was the Knights’ 20th state title in the last 22 tournaments in which they’ve competed.

Shannon Murphy, Kathryn Sandercock, Olivia Giaquinto and Kayla Turner each had two hits for the Knights.

Erin Sweeney earned the win in the pitcher’s circle.

The win came six days after O’Connell lost to St. Mary’s Ryken 1-0 in the WCAC championship game.

The Knights finished the season with a 27-3 record.

Yorktown Girls Fall In Conference 6 Final

The Yorktown girls’ soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to McLean in penalty kicks, 0-0 (3-2), during the Conference 6 championship game on May 21 at McLean High School.

The loss dropped the Patriots’ record to 12-1-3.

Yorktown will host Lake Braddock in the opening round of the 6A North region tournament at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27.

Yorktown Boys’, Girls’ Lax Fall in Conference Semis

The Yorktown boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams each lost in the semifinals of the Conference 6 tournament.

The boys’ team lost to Langley 10-5 on May 20 and the girls’ team lost to Madison 26-3.

Both Yorktown teams faced Woodson on Tuesday, after The Connection’s deadline, in the opening round of the 6A North region tournament.
