A 22-year-old man was hit and killed by a car around 1:15 a.m. on July 2 while attempting to cross Richmond Highway. Gerson Rodriguez Cruz, of Alexandria, died at the scene. He was hit by a 2016 Mercedes sedan traveling southbound on Richmond Highway just after Belvoir Drive. The driver of the car stayed on the scene and cooperated with officers. Crash Reconstruction detectives say speed and alcohol were not factors and no charges are pending. It appears Rodriguez Cruz was not in a crosswalk at the time he was struck.
Detectives are investigating whether a second vehicle may have hit Rodriguez Cruz, and it’s possible the driver didn't know.
