The new Backlick Road bridge over CSX Railroad located just north of Cinder Bed Road is now open to traffic, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. The Backlick Road railroad crossing was closed in November 2017 to demolish the previous two-lane bridge and replace it with a slightly higher one that accommodates the addition of new railroad tracks as part of the Commonwealth’s Atlantic Gateway Project.

The temporary access road connecting Backlick Road to the ramp from Telegraph Road (Route 611) to northbound Fairfax County Parkway that was open during construction is now closed.

Major work is now complete on the bridge project, which also includes the following improvements:

  • Wider shared-use path on bridge.

  • New pavement on both ends of the bridge.

  • New curb and gutter on the southern approach to the bridge.

  • Wider entry at the north end of the bridge to provide more room for vehicles, particularly trucks.

Some final detail work on the $9.2 million project will continue this winter, without major traffic impacts. The project is expected to be under budget and finish ahead of its April 2019 completion date.
