OrthoVirginia Welcomes Four New Physicians in Northern Virginia

OrthoVirginia is pleased to announce Johnathan A. Bernard, MD, MPH; Nathan Coleman, MD; Elliott J. Kim, MD; and William P. Petersen, MD, MPH, have joined OrthoVirginia in Northern Virginia. The physicians will provide sports medicine, spine, and joint care.

“We are delighted to have these excellent four physicians joining OrthoVirginia” said Justin Zakia, Chief Administrative Officer, OrthoVirginia North. “Dr. Kim’s expertise in spine surgery will fulfills a critical need in the Alexandria community, and Dr. Petersen’s interest in complex adult reconstruction and revision total joint surgery will better enable us to support our rapidly growing patient population.”

Dr. Bernard, a shoulder surgeon and sports medicine physician, attended the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland for his undergraduate education and earned his medical degree from the Yale University School of Medicine. He completed his residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland and went on to do a fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City and an AO Short-Fellowship in Geneva, Switzerland. He earned his Masters in Public Health at the Harvard University School of Public Health.

Dr. Coleman, specializing in sports medicine and knee and shoulder care, attended University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota for his undergraduate education and earned his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD. He completed his residency at the University of Washington and Affiliated Hospitals and went on to do a specialized fellowship in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, New York.

Drs. Bernard, Coleman joined the practice Sept. 9, 2019 and are seeing patients and accepting new patients at the Herndon office.

Dr. Kim, a spine surgeon, attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee for his undergraduate education and earned his medical degree from the Vanderbilt School of Medicine. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Vanderbilt School of Medicine and went on to do a specialized fellowship in spine surgery at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Kim is now accepting new patients at the Arlington and Springfield offices.

Dr. Petersen, specializing in joint replacements and hip and knee care, attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia for his undergraduate education and earned his medical degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. He completed his residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City and went on to do a specialized fellowship in adult hip and knee reconstruction at New York University Langone Orthopaedic Hospital/Insall-Scott-Kelly Institute for Orthopedics in New York City. Dr. Petersen is now accepting new patients in the Arlington and Fair Oaks offices.
