City Pays Tribute To Its Veterans

American Legion Post #24 held a Veteran's Day ceremony at the Alexandria National Cemetery Tuesday. Post 24 Commander Nancy Farrington led those gathered in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Carol Howerton, Chaplain of the Kate Waller Barrett Chapter of the DAR, gave the invocation. Chairman Bill McNamara presented the keynote address and National Guard Master Sergeant Bill Snyder, tolled the bell for all those who have lost their lives serving their country. A reception was held later at the American Legion Hall next to Gadsby's Tavern.

ALSO TUESDAY, Friends of Rocky Versace were joined by the children of the Mount Vernon Recreation Center, the Mount Vernon Community School, members of the Alexandria American Legion and neighbors in the community for a Veterans Day Ceremony Tuesday. Chaplain Glen L. Bloomstrom gave the invocation, followed by the reading of the 67 Veterans’ names that appear on the benches of the new memorial. The names were read by Mt. Vernon Community School principal Carroll Williams. Former Councilman David Speck gave the memorial tribute and Alexandria American Legion Commander, (CWO5, USA) Nancy Farrington, together with Mount Vernon Center director, Sheila Whiting, placed a wreath at the center of the Versace Plaza.
