Teen Stabbed in Herndon Area
Officers responded to a report of a stabbing in the 2100 block of Astoria Avenue shortly after 2 a.m. Wednesday, July 10.
Officers determined that there was a party at this location. A 17-year-old boy had suffered a stab wound following an argument that reportedly took place at the party. The teen was transported to a local hospital in life-threatening condition.
Following investigation, detectives arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with the stabbing. Jose Ortiz of 1249 Elden St., Herndon was charged with malicious wounding and is being held at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.
The victim remains in the hospital in non-life threatening condition.

Portrait Competition Call for Art
Professional and amateur artists aged 18 or older residing in Virginia, Maryland, the District of Columbia, Delaware and West Virginia are invited to submit entries to ArtSpace Herndon’s fifth annual Portrait Competition. The deadline for submissions is Sept. 5 at 2 p.m. A select panel of jurors will evaluate entries submitted and select the finalists. Finalists will exhibit at ArtSpace Herndon from Tuesday, Oct. 1 through Sunday, Nov. 3. Winners of the competition will be announced at the reception and awards ceremony Saturday, Oct. 5, from 7 to 9 p.m. The first place winner will receive a $500 prize; $200 will be awarded to the second place winner; and $100 will be awarded to the third place winner.
This year’s judge is Ted Reed, an international award-winning artist who teaches portrait, figure and still-life painting. The jurors for this year’s competition are Jordan Xu and Ellen Todd.
