Nov. 9-16 schedule of events

Alexandria Honors Veterans Week will kick off a series of events to honor and celebrate the service of local veterans.

Nov. 9 – EOD Warrior Foundation fundraiser, sponsored by the Sons of the American Legion, the Old Dominion Boat Club and the EOD Warrior Foundation. 1-8 p.m. at the Old Dominion Boat Club, 1 King St. Food, entertainment, EOD demonstrations. $20.

Nov. 10-16 — Vets Gotta Eat! Restaurant Deals for Veterans – discount offered at more than 45 local restaurants for veterans and their families (up to parties of six). Veteran customers should show their ID card or other proof of veteran status to get the Vets Gotta Eat! discount. For complete list of participating restaurants, visit

Nov. 10- Dec. 1 — Year of the Veteran Art Exhibit — The Art League’s IMPART (Injured Military Personnel Art) is partnering with the USO, Fort Belvoir, Combat Paper and the Smithsonian Arts, Military + Healing program for an exhibit honoring the work of veterans currently participating in art programs and/or classes through the partnering organizations. City Hall, 301 King St. Artists’ Reception: Tuesday, Nov. 11 from 5 - 7 p.m.

Nov. 10-16 — Veterans History Project — Ordinary Veterans, Extraordinary Stories. To date, 90,000 veterans have shared their story with the Veterans History Project — a program of the Library of Congress — to collect and preserve personal accounts of veterans for future generations. Trained volunteers will conduct interviews for all veterans interested in sharing their stories. Location: Long and Foster Realtors, 400 King St. Interviews will take approximately 60 minutes. To make an appointment or for questions, call 703-683-0400. At the same location, Long and Foster will have a historical display with information about the 50th Commemoration of the Vietnam War.

Nov. 11: Veterans Day 2014 Events

  • Lecture: African American Involvement in WWI — The Alexandria Black History Museum will host a free lecture on African American involvement in the World War I with historian C.R. Gibbs, on Monday, Nov. 11 from 11 a.m. -12:30 p.m. Due to limited seating reservations are encouraged. Call 703-746-4356 to make reservations. 902 Wythe St.
  • Veterans Day Concert — Mount Vernon Estate & Gardens. Special activities include a patriotic community concert by the all-veteran barbershop chorus at 11 a.m., at 2 p.m. wreath-laying at the tomb of George Washington. Active duty military personnel and veterans are admitted free of charge. The wreath laying is included with regular Mount Vernon admission. The barbershop concert and Martha Washington program are free.
  • Capt. Rocky Versace Ceremony — 1-2 p.m. Mt. Vernon Recreation Center. The one-hour ceremony includes the reading the names of Alexandria’s 67 Vietnam War Fallen Heroes, recognition of all U.S. Military Veterans, reading of the Captain Versace Medal of Honor Citation, reading the tribute to Capt. Versace written by his fellow POW, 1st Lt. James "Nick" Rowe, wreath laying, the sounding of "Taps" and the singing of “God Bless America”
  • Team Red, White & Blue Run — 6 p.m. at 301 King St. Team RWB Alexandria meets every Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. for a weekly walk/run. After the run, the group heads to Bilbo Baggins For more information, call Bill Rausch, Team RWB Leader, 703-851-6208.
