There’s no better way to kick off the summer than with Springfield Days, coming this year May 31-June 1.

The community event, always the weekend after Memorial Day, starts with the Springfield 5K on May 31 at 8 a.m. The route takes runners along the upcoming Springfield Town Center and features live bands along the course.

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., check out the PetFest at South Run Park. The event includes Paws on Parade and a free 10-minute reading with Diane Roadcap, an animal communicator. At 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., catch a showing of “Mutts Gone Nuts,” a comedy routine where rescued dogs are the stars. There will be a variety of exhibitions, and pets on a leash are welcome

The car show begins at 10 a.m., and will feature cars and trucks of all kinds. Vehicles must be registered beginning at 8 a.m. on May 31.

The highlight of the second day of Springfield Days, June 1, is the Cardboard Boat Regatta, now in its 25th year. The event, which takes place at Lake Accotink Park, will leave onlookers to see whose boat is sturdy enough to complete the race, and whose will sink. The park entrance fee is $4, and the race begins at 2 p.m.

It’s not summer without Springfield Days-everyone in Fairfax County is welcome to join in the celebration.
