Questions

What is one issue that defines your call to serve, why does it matter, and how will you tackle it?

I believe education is one of the most important functions of government. Currently we are underfunding our schools K-12 and higher education. I will work with the Governor and members of the General Assembly to restore funding to education including a greater investment in preschool education.

What distinguishes you from your opponent(s) and why should voters choose you?

I currently do not have an opponent. I work very hard as a full-time legislator serving my constituents throughout the year.

Given the political makeup of the state legislature, what examples from your own experience suggests you can successfully bridge the intense partisan differences there?

I have been a part of every major compromise that has moved the Commonwealth forward including balancing the budget in 2004 and providing funding for transportation in 2013.

In order, list your top 5 specific legislative priorities.

Increase funding for education; Make the Earned Income Tax Credit partially refundable; Expand Medicaid to close the coverage gap; Enact commonsense gun safety measures including universal background checks; Raise the minimum wage

How has your district changed in the last 10 years? What caused those changes?

Reston and western Fairfax have seen tremendous growth fueled in part by the Silver Line. The population has gotten younger even as the number of senior citizens is high. Population is more diverse.

Will you support legislation restricting high interest lending including car title loans?

Yes

Will you support funding for Fostering Connections which would result in an influx of federal funding for foster children aging out of foster care?

Yes

Do you support expansion of Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, and if so, what would you do to make that happen?

Yes. Whatever compromise that is necessary to make it happen.
