Young Proposes $634.8 Million Budget

City Manager Rashad Young submitted his proposal for a $634.8 million General Fund Operating Budget for Fiscal Year 2015 before City Council Tuesday, Feb. 25, reflecting an increase of 1.6 percent over last year's budget while maintaining current real estate and personal property tax rates. “Expenditures are growing at a faster rate than revenue,” said Young in detailing his proposed budget during a press briefing earlier in the day. “The challenge always is how to put together this big jigsaw puzzle to meet the needs of the different constituencies and stakeholder groups.”

One of Alexandria’s longest serving firefighters has stowed his equipment for the last time. As of April 29, Capt. Thurston McClain officially said goodbye to emergency calls and 24-hour shifts when he retired after serving 34 years with the Alexandria Fire Department.

Meals On Wheels volunteers recognized.

Like most women, Ede Thomas was hesitant to reply when asked her age. “I'm 93,” Thomas whispered. “But don't print that. I still tell everyone I'm 35.” Retired since 1987, Thomas has been a volunteer for the Meals On Wheels program for 25 years. Along with other volunteers, she was honored for her service Oct. 18 at the Senior Services of Alexandria volunteer appreciation luncheon at The Fountains at Washington House. “I thought I needed to do something worthwhile when I retired,” Thomas said. “So I started delivering meals with Westminster Presbyterian Church. I am the coordinator there now but always enjoyed delivering the meals, seeing the people and really getting to know and talk to them.
