At 91-years-old, Air Force Col. Kim Ching (ret.) was the youngster among World War II veterans who gathered Aug. 20 at American Legion Post 24 in Old Town to commemorate Victory Over Japan Day, otherwise known as V-J Day.
The Power of Pink
Walk to fight breast cancer raises $90,000.
Still recovering from a double mastectomy in 1995, Lawson founded the city's annual Walk to Fight Breast Cancer, which celebrated its 17th anniversary Oct. 20 and raised more than $90,000 to fund mammograms and other diagnostic screenings for Alexandria women who are not adequately insured to obtain medical care.

Weaver Honored
Longtime Campagna Center volunteer Bridget Weaver was honored Oct. 4 with the Elizabeth Anne Campagna Award at a Circle of 1000 reception at the home of Douglas and Grace Marie Turner. “I am completely overwhelmed,” said Weaver, who began her service to the Campagna Center 20 years ago as a member of the Junior Friends. “I am very humbled to receive this award and especially honored that it is named for a woman who continues to be a beacon to all of us.”

The name Humbert R. Versace is inscribed on Panel 01E, Row 033 of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington. But in his hometown, “Rocky” Versace’s sacrifice and that of 66 other Alexandrians is memorialized in a statue on Commonwealth Avenue in Del Ray.

Trio rocks Hard Times Café.
After a 20-year absence in Alexandria, the female trio of Huxtable, Christensen and Hood took to the stage Sept. 8, performing to a capacity crowd at Hard Times Café in Old Town. Cheering on the group were Hard Times founders and brothers Jim and Fred Parker, husband of vocalist Carol Christensen, along with their sons Ned and Jonathan Parker. “I think I'm the only Parker without any musical talent,” laughed Ned Parker, whose brother Jonathan is a professional jazz saxophonist. “I guess that's why I'm taking the tickets at the door.”
Alexandria: Warehouse Sale Set for Feb. 6
Location moved to Westin Hotel.
The Old Town Boutique District will hold its annual Warehouse Sale Feb. 6 at the Westin Alexandria Hotel, a change in location from last year’s sale, which was held at the George Washington Masonic Memorial.
